Method and Habitat | ||
Use letter codes (A=1-9, B=10-99, C=100 or more) to record the numbers of organisms found in a total sample. Then add up the number of letters in each column and multiply by the indicated value. The following columns are divided based on the organism's sensitivity to pollution. | (check all that apply) Method used: Muddy Bottom Rocky Bottom | Habitat selected for sampling: riffle leaf pack/woody debris streambed with silty area (very fine particles) streambed with sand or small gravel vegetated bank other (specify) |
Sensitive | Somewhat Sensitive | Tolerant |
---|---|---|
stonefly nymphs mayfly nymphs water penny larvae riffle beetle aquatic snipe flies caddisflies gilled snails |
common net spinning caddisflies dobsonfly/hellgrammites & fishfly dragonfly & damselfly nymphs crayfish crane flies larvae aquatic sow bugs scud clams & mussels |
midge fly larvae blackfly larvae lunged snails aquatic worms leech |
1 # of letters times 3 = 3 | 1 # of letters times 2 = 2 | 3 # of letters times 1 = 3 |
Now add together the three index values = 8 total index value. The total index value will give you an indication of the water quality of your stream. Good water quality is indicated by a variety of different kinds of organisms, with no one kind making up the majority of the sample. |
